CME Course Description

This two-hour live course, designed by Quality Interactions®, provides physicians with the tools and skills necessary to avoid cultural generalizations while improving their ability to understand, communicate with and care for patients from diverse backgrounds. This course meets Pennsylvania-mandated CME requirements for risk management/patient safety.

A range of social and cultural patient-provider issues will be discussed, including:

• The intersection of cultural competence and patient-centered care

• Language barriers and interpretation

• Fears and misconceptions about medicine

• Culturally based health beliefs

• Alternative practices

Statement of Need

The Lehigh Valley has experienced a steady and significant increase in its Latino population. In today’s multi-cultural society, ensuring access to quality health care for everyone requires that physicians understand how each patient’s socio-cultural background affects his or her health beliefs and behaviors. Failure to understand and manage social and cultural differences may have significant consequences for minority groups, in particular. Patient satisfaction and compliance with medical recommendations are closely related to the effectiveness of communication and the physician-patient relationship.

Target Audience

Physicians

Learning Objectives

§ Understand basics of cultural competence in health care and the conditions that give rise to racial and ethnic health disparities
§ Become familiar with the patient-based approach to cross-cultural care
§ Improve communication skills and cooperation in cross-cultural patient interactions
